Green Giant wins prestigious grocery product of the year award

Green Giant Naturally Sweet canned sweet corn has won a prestigious grocery product of the year award in the United Kingdom.

The “Naturally Sweet” variety, which has been available in the UK for several years, received the “Ambiant Grocery Product of the Year” in the 2008 Grocer Branded Excellence Awards. The Grocer – the UK’s leading food retailing publication – launched the multi-category awards program this year.

The product was praised for its consistency and versatility. “A must for any larder,” according to one reviewer.

Green Giant Naturally Sweet went through a rigorous judging process, beating out several other brands on attributes such as initial appearance, smell, taste, texture, packaging, health and value.

Two rounds of judging
The first round of this judging consisted of an independent consumer judging panel - a minimum of 50 respondents from six sampling points across Great Britain were involved in sampling all of the products up for the award.

The color of the corn, its sweetness, and firm, yet moist texture were consistently praised across all of the six groups. “Tastes like corn straight from the cob,” according to one reviewer. “Very different from normal canned sweet corn,” said another.

A panel of industry experts – including development chefs, consumer magazine editors and industry experts with retail buying experience – conducted a second round of judging.

Green Giant beat out competition from Branston Relish’s Hot Chili & Jalapeño offering (Premier Foods), Luxury Lemon Curd (The English Provender Company), Hellman’s Real Mayonnaise (Unilever) and Organic Fig Relish (The Tacklement Company).
